United Downs Raceway - Sunday 24th February 2013

Just shy of 50 drivers took advantage of the annual Practice Event at St Day, across all six classes which Autospeed regularly stage racing for.

There were fourteen BriSCA F2 Stock Cars.  Lenny’s Snacks had offered a bonus prize for the driver who posted the day’s single quickest lap time, and that honour went to 676 Neil Hooper.  By the end of the whole session, Hooper had recorded the fastest time, with 315 Justin Fisher second in his new Motorworld, 395 Jason Phillips was third and 352 Dave Sansom, using the ex-Mark Guinchard RCE, was fourth.

460 Cliff Friend was the only Saloon Stock Car in attendance, and he improved his own times as the day progressed.  The car’s builder, former British Champion Darren Bradford, and reigning World Champion Eddie Darby, also put the car through its paces.

Despite a sprinkling of Stock Rods, it was the unpainted, yet, new Toyota Starlet of stalwart racer 306 Neil Truran that kept the electronic timing system on its toes.  With work commitments restricting his racing options for the time being, former Points Champion Truran only aims to race later on in the season, but was still keen to get some laps at the wheel of his new car.

The number of youngsters in the Ministox almost made it into double figures, again underlining the enthusiasm of youth.  The majority were Cornish based, although 922 Joe Parker and 907 Cameron Lawrence had journeyed down from Devon.

Amongst an assortement of Bangers and National Bangers, the most interesting car on show was the Triumph of 891 Darren Wade – still in fine fettle after a trio of wins at last year’s A Night To Triumph event at Smeatharpe.
