United Downs Raceway - Sunday 5th May 2013

At long last, racegoers were treated to bright sunshine, as the weather took a positive turn to the good. Although basic and rudimentary, the newly created seating area on the home straight afforded over 100 spectators the chance to have somewhere to sit, and with the pit area bursting with a splendid entry of BriSCA F2 Stock Cars, the scene was set fair for some great racing. Without question, the F2s did not disappoint.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars

The opening heat for F2s saw a win for 835 Matt Westaway, as he made full use of his drop to yellow. 605 Liam Rowe came into the reckoning late on, but had to settle for second. In heat two, there was an early race suspension when 526 Marc Rowe tangled with track debutant 437 Danny Withers, and the former ended up on his side, next to the safety fence on the exit of turn two. 522 Chris Mikulla took the win when the race was restarted. A frenzied consolation saw lots of lower graders scrambling to try to make the final, and 830 Andrew Bennett pounced late on to reel in long time leader 979 Paul Moss. The final was outstanding; just as would be expected with 30 cars on the starting grid. 229 Jon Kind and 476 Ryan Wadling tangled right at the start, but spun to the infield, and very soon thereafter, 991 Ryan Hoskin got sideways in the pits bend. He was hit by 756 Richard Thomas, as 596 Ritchie Mead piled in and 797 Dan Moss nearly upended 189 Paul Butcher. The more the cars tangled, the less room there was, and eventually, the whole field came to a halt in one enormous pits bend blockage. Unsurprisingly, the red flags brought about the need for a complete re-run, but that had only just started when 290 Jay Tomkins rolled over on the home straight. At the third time of asking, the race developed into a fine contest. Westaway looked set, at one point, to make it a heat and final double, but he was overhauled by 116 Ashley Rundle. Mikulla could not get to Rundle, before superstar graded 886 Chris Bradbury and 783 James Rygor dragged Mikulla into their own battle. As the three of them fought amongst themselves, Rundle showed great calmness at the front. Under increasing pressure from those chasing him, Rundle produced two perfect laps at the end of the race to ensure he was out of range on the last bend, and thus, it was Rundle who took the win, for back-to-back finals at St Day, and a first ever promotion to the star grade. Rygor won a superb Grand National race to end the day, getting the better of Bradbury and 921 Jack Aldridge in a thrilling mid-race conest.

Saloon Stock Cars

The 13-car entry of Saloon Stock Cars featured 200 James Ogborn on his debut, racing the borrowed Cliff Friend car, and the return of brothers 176 Murray Jones and 186 Todd Jones – although engine problems restricted the latter to just one race; the final. New grades had shuffled the pack, and 315 Tristan Claydon made the most of his fall to yellow, to battle with 2 Paul Tuppen for the lead. However, their duel served only to allow World Champion 1 Eddie Darby to close on them, and it was the gold top who took the honours. Heat two saw Ogborn get to grips with the Saloon Stock Car, and he led a number of laps. However, it was Claydon who edged past to get himself out front again, and this time he made sure he was not to be caught, with Darby having to settle for second. The final followed the same pattern, and Darby again ran out of laps in his pursuit of Claydon, with 120 Shane Brown completing a trio of third places.

Ministox

Just a dozen youngsters were on hand for their latest outing. Moved from the rear of the grid to the front in view of his fine displays as a novice driver, 922 Joe Parker set the pace in the first heat. 910 Tom Cadby swept past, chased hard by 907 Cameron Lawrence. The battle for third was lively, with several spinners, which all contributed to a first trophy place finish for Parker. Heat two saw Parker and 951 Aiden Vincent amongst those who crashed out in the pits bend. Lawrence held off a spirited chase from 989 Joe Marquand, to win, with 977 Kieren Bradford in third. The final was a similar tale up front as Lawrence hit the front, and was chased by Marquand. There was little to nothing between them, but that is how they finished; a second win for Lawrence, with Cadby completing the top three.

Double Decker Bangers

After the successes of previous years, numbers were perilously low, as just two pairs did battle. However, the first heat ended in farce. 101 Andrew Bishop and 422 Tristan Beresford lost drive and ground to a halt. That left 991 Ryan Hoskin and 903 Adam Neville to circulate on their own, as they counted down the remaining laps. Incredibly, though, and underlining how difficult it is to race a Double Decker pairing, they somehow contrived to roll on to their side, unaided! Thus, neither of the two pairs finished the first race. The next race brought about some fine “cat and mouse” play. Bishop and Beresford were clearly slower, but played their part in some fine entertainment, by repeatedly trying to hinder and blight the run of Hoskin and Neville. The efforts of all four drivers was rewarded with a heartfelt round of applause from the crowd, at the end of a battle staged with an underlying spirit of sporting fun. The attempt at a last race into a DD ended abruptly, when the two pairs of cars crashed together, and neither could find any drive to get mobile again.
