United Downs Raceway - Sunday 10th August 2014

Fears of inclement weather, resulting from Hurricane Bertha proved to be unfounded, for although it was windy and blustery at the United Downs Raceway, St Day, the meeting enjoyed almost unbroken sunshine throughout the afternoon.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars

A slightly depleted entry of F2s ran to a two from three format.  On his first St Day outing for twelve years, 517 Richard James made most of the running in the first heat, but a late charge by star man 522 Chris Mikulla saw him reel him in for victory.  Heat two was led by 572 James Lindsay, from 428 Tyla Keveth and 290 Jay Tomkins.  They were overhauled by 126 Jamie Avery, and he swiftly hit the front, and won with relative ease.  World Champion 783 James Rygor was in his new car for the first time, and he raced through to second place.  In heat three, Rygor became embroiled in a battle with 206 Matt Brewer, and the gold top failed to finish.  As he departed, so too did 979 Paul Moss, when he spun to the infield with steering damage picked up in the pits bend.  Avery won again, with 254 Richard Beere the runner-up this time.  The Final saw James Lindsay break away from the front of the grid early on, and at one point, he looked to have built a possible winning lead.  Beere and Keveth led the chase, but they succumbed to Avery, and it was the double heat winner who moved into second place and hunted down the distant leader.  Just after the halfway point, Avery made his move, and he took the lead.  Undeterred, Lindsay held on to second place.  Beere relieved Lindsay of second place as the lap boards appeared, and on the final lap Lindsay slammed the door shut on World Champion Rygor to protect third place. The all-gold 783 car was forced over the infield; Lindsay held on for third, and Mikulla nipped by for fourth.  There was more front running from Lindsay in the GN, but his lead was nullified by a yellow flag, which, ironically, was called for after his father, 683 Bryan Lindsay, was spun around and left stranded in the turnstile bend.  At the restart, James pounced to move ahead, but Beere then swept past him to complete a very successful day for himself with a victory.

Old Skool Unlimited cc National Bangers

The entry of Old Skool unlimited cc National Bangers included four drivers who raced in the series for the first time: F2 racer 302 Dale Moon, local driver 862 Darryl Cock and the Newton Abbot based pairing of 382 Josh Hutchings and 275 Tony Woodside.  Veteran racer 252 Lib James was spun aside at the pit gate and clobbered the marker tyre, early on, as a battle raged involving 114 Nick Courtier, 120 Mark Ashley and 715 Chris Langmaid.  Those three disputed the lead, until Ashley took full advantage of a clutch of backmarkers to steal the inside line and break free.  He stormed clear and ran out a comfortable winner, with 382 Josh Hutchings making good progress late on to finish second.  In heat two, Josh Hutchings looked on course for a first ever win, but very late on, he came under fire from backmarker 148 Reece Frayne and after a second attempt, Frayne spun Hutchings.  That left Mark Ashley to inherit the lead, and he celebrated by spinning aside Woodside before securing a second win.  After coming so close in the previous race, Josh Hutchings was not to be denied in the final, and he sealed a comprehensive win.

Ministox

There was a hectic and chaotic start to the opening heat for the youngsters, which saw 180 Charlie Lobb spun around, and he was left stranded on the back straight.  When the race resumed, 922 Joe Parker performed a rollover in the pits bend, which brought about a further caution period.  From the single file restart , 907 Cameron Lawrence soon overhauled 951 Aiden Vincent and 987 Ethan Pope to win convincingly, from 910 Tom Cadby and Vincent.  Heat two developed into a two-horse race, as Lawrence hunted down Pope and edged past on the final lap, with 917 Warren Darby in third.  The final was led off by Lobb and 982 Sophie Daughtrey, and they enjoyed a good, confidence boosting spell, out front.  Darby was first to make the move, and he eventually took the lead from Lobb.  Darby went on to win, from Lawrence, whilst Lobb took a big dive at Pope on the final bend in the scramble for third.  Pope spun, Lobb was delayed, and Parker inherited the last rostrum place.
