Smeatharpe Stadium - Monday 25th May 2009

The annual Crasharama fixture attracted a sizeable crowd on Spring Bank Holiday Monday, where just shy of 70 unlimited cc National Bangers provided an action-packed fixture, ably supported by BriSCA F2 Stock Cars.

National Bangers (unlimited cc)

A most impressive showing of National Bangers included an assortment of exotic cars, not least the sumptuous Chevrolet Caprice of 714 Paul Smaldon, which was voted the Car of the Day.  The car was splendidly presented too, and was one of a number to gain a Smart Car award.
The entry of cars was divided into two very busy heats, which were won by 199 Jamie Wyatt and track debutant, 455 Rick Finney of Team Stinkbridge.
Much work was going on in the pit area ahead of the consolation, and a decision was taken to split into two races, thereby giving some of the stragglers, the extra time they needed to effect repairs and get back out for the second of the last chance races.  133 Ben Wyatt and 360 Jack Reynolds ran out the winners of the respective consolation races.
A packed grid of qualifiers thereby contested the Crasharama 11 grand final, which was comprehensively won by Jamie Wyatt.  An exciting race brewed up to a crescendo of crashes in the closing stages, with 521 Ashley Riley annihilating 341 Andrew Jones and 384 John Golden in two separate incidents, before 190 Steve Bailey blasted Riley for good measure.  298 Sam Wyatt finished as the runner-up to his brother, with Ash Riley completing the podium places.
A typically brutal Allcomers race, was littered with more very heavy crashing.  Just four cars went the distance, which was cut short at the end, after 45 Anthony Croshaw whose car went on fire, following a head-on crash with 989 Dean Arm.
Twenty one drivers contested the end of meeting Destruction Derby.  Even though 239 Steve Carter was the last car moving, he had spent too long wedged in a pit bend pile-up, and he graciously accepted the decision, to track back to 133 Karl Day as the rightful winner of the event.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars

For the fourth time this season, in as many meetings at Smeatharpe, there was a different winner of the BriSCA F2 feature final.  374 Gary Stephens made the most of some chaotic early stages, to build a commanding lead.  Back amongst the star graders, 676 Neil Hooper and 886 Chris Bradbury tangled early on, which cost them a lot of time.  Bradbury did progress up the order, and blasted 315 Justin Fisher wide on the last bend, to claim third, but by that stage, Stephens had recorded a maiden final win, with 700 Adam Rubery trailing him home in second place.
The meeting also saw a career first win for 162 Richard Swales, whilst 14 Mike Priddle won for the first time this season, when he took the opening heat.
