United Downs Raceway - Sunday 14th June 2009

The first summer fixture at the United Downs Raceway, St Day, saw 190 Steve Bailey secure a last lap victory in the Blockbusta Wild Card race for unlimited cc National Bangers, and another fine showing of Stock Rods, whilst the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars extend their sequence of having a different feature final winner at each of their meetings at the track this season, as 530 Matt Deeble took the top honours this time.

National Bangers (unlimited cc)

Big, unlimited cc National Bangers, made their first of just two appearances at St Day this season, and whilst there were not a large number of them, they did serve up some rough action at times.
The main event was the annual Blockbusta Wild Card race, in which the winner earned a driver direct entry on to the grid for Blockbusta - the £2000 Open showdown on August Bank Holiday Sunday.
For most of the Blockbusta Wild Card race, 714 Paul Smaldon looked on course for victory, but in the closing stages, former Blockbusta Champion 190 Steve Bailey reeled him in, and on the last lap, he edged Smaldon wide.  07 Jerry Harvey had been blasted twice on the back straight, and his mangled car caused a chicane effect.  As Bailey grabbed the inside line, Smaldon was forced to the outside, and thus Bailey stormed to the chequered flag.
239 Steve Carter took the next race, and Bailey won again in the third event of the day.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars

A 25-car showing of F2s ran to a two from three format.  642 Dave Luscombe won the opener, and 105 Ross Rowe took heat two.  Rowe won again in heat three, nudging 530 Matt Deeble aside in a thrilling last bend finish.
However, come the final, and it was the turn of Deeble to enjoy his time in the limelight.  The disappointment of heat three clearly acted as a real spur for Deeble in the final, which was sponsored by Heron Refinishing - Accident Repair Specialists, of Troon.  Right from the start of the race, Deeble charged purposefully to the front of his grade, and set off in pursuit of race leader 31 Simon Bassett.  Once he had swept past Bassett, Deeble built up a useful lead.  The star men from the rear of the grid were clearly finding the going tough, and made little impression on the race leaders.  However, Ross Rowe was progressing up the order, and into the final quarter of the race, Rowe began to close dramatically on Deeble.  However, the laps ticked by all too quickly for Rowe, and Deeble remained comfortably in the clear as the chequered flag fell on him, to seal a first final win of the season. With 830 Andrew Bennett placing third, it was an all-Cornish top three.  In fourth was 676 Neil Hooper - the first star grade finisher - and he went on to claim a win in the end of meeting Grand National race.

Stock Rods

The non-contact Stock Rods again appeared in very good numbers, with a fine showing of 19 drivers - equalling the best of the season so far at St Day.
290 Jay Tomkins showed his class and experience to storm to a fine win in the opening heat.  Tomkins was also first over the line in a fractious Stock Rod final, but along the way, he had spun aside 241 Stewart Watters, and was duly docked two places.  That elevated 565 Andy Giles into first place, with 193 Chris Drake the runner-up.
Undeterred, Tomkins bounced back to win the Grand National, and end the meeting as the top points scorer in the Stock Rods.
