United Downs Raceway - Sunday 30th August 2009

The damp weather returned to the west of Cornwall as 64 National Bangers took to the track to prove once again, that Blockbusta was THE meeting to attend over the Bank Holiday weekend.

National Bangers (unlimited cc) Blockbusta

With such an impressive number of drivers ready to do battle, the two heats were always going to be lively, and 31 cars made the start for Heat one. As ever the action came thick and fast starting with 747 Liam Martin spinning 127 Peter Wake into a full roll before Bungle landed back on all four wheels. 55 James Ogborn then wasted 255 Andy Roe on the turnstile bend before 617 Jack Overy took up the running with three laps to go, and Overy held on to take the first heat. Heat two again saw plenty of huge hits with 266 Tiggy blasting 177 Will Powell before the red flags came out after 103 Lee Bugler nearly took 18 Richard Webb into a complete roll only to cause an inner marker tyre to block the track. From the restart 640 Henk deJager blasted 28 Dan Caplin and then took a huge hit from 415 Sean “Squeeky” Gillett. Out came the red flags again. The second restart saw 208 Jimmy “The Finger” Randall take the flag but only after “The Freez” took yet another huge hit – this time from 741 Alex “Boris” Waterman. The consolation lasted a few laps before a complete blockage of the track by the pit gate forced a stoppage, and from the carnage only 11 cars managed to crawl free. The dash to the chequered flag was subsequently won by 202 Mike “Kilf” Kilford.
The final started with seeded 190 Steve “Pikey” Bailey drawing 6. As the first six rows went round to the back of the grid, this put 714 Paul “No Show” Smaldon and 228 Tom Caplin on pole position. 528 Alan “Jethro” Hunt wasted no time in dispatching 66 Dave Spooner and “No Show” took up the lead. No sooner had Jack Overy took over, then he lost a wheel when he tangled with “Squeeky”. 998 Wayne Cottrill caught and spun “No Show” but with the laps ticking away his car went sick, and Cottrill slowed dramatically. Initially, it appeared that “Kilf” had taken the lead, but he was a lap down, and thus, it was Pikey who was the real leader, and he duly captured the Blockbusta title for a second time – winning in style from the back of the field, from “The Finger”, 241 Liam Cracknell and “No Show”.
The most action came in the Allcomers race. On the first bend 57 James Reeves waded in to 320 Tim Gardener and was then joined by Boris. 133 Ben “Werzal” Wyatt took advantage of Boris’ ill fortune by going in big style to the back of Boris but this left him wide open to an attack from Pikey who blasted Werzal. This wasn’t the end of the jacking train though, as 114 Mike Street ploughed in to the back of Pikey which subsequently inflicted even more damage on Werzal, and just for good measure “Cotty Jnr” then joined the back of the huge wrecking train. Werzal’s Jag had snapped, and the red flags were brought out. As some consolation, Werzal’s was to eventually be crowned the most wrecked car of the meeting, and a further result of the incident was that Pikey was awarded the DT Videos Hit of the Day prize. 617 Jack Overy won the race from the restart, which also saw another huge hit from 239 Steve “Nemesis” Carter on 99 David “Bam” Spooner, that left Bam waving cars in to him with a huge smile on his face!
14 cars made it on to track for the King of Crash/DD and they were also presented with the empty Hearse of “The Freez” who after travelling all the way from Holland, decided to give the car a big send off by leaving it in the middle of the track as target practice. 737 Ian “Crash” Crandon took some stopping in his 1959 Buick, but ultimately, Pikey saw him off, and he landed the last hit, with a thumping blitz of Boris, to round off an excellent day for himself and for the National Bangers.

Saloon Stock Cars

Numbers were a little disappointing in the Saloon Stock Cars, but their trio of races did yield three different winners throughout the afternoon. 125 Mike Hibberd showed early promise in heat one before being spun with two laps remaining, with 490 Ian Jarman winning. Hibberd got his reward in heat two as he used his knowledge of his local track to claim his first win since switching formulas. 30 Barry Hollett won an eventful final with the newly crowned World Champion 360 Carl Waterfield running a close second, and Jarman completed the top three.

Ministox

A good turnout of visiting drivers saw 24 youngsters on track to compete for the Cornish Championship.
149 Todd Payne won heat one with 945 Ashley Prisk taking heat two. On his track debut, 167 James Meadows was crowned the Cornish Champion as he took the flag from 171 Adam O’Dell and 971 Jason Cox.
