United Downs Raceway - Sunday 9th August 2009

The rain came to South West Cornwall just as the meeting got under way, but it didn't dampen the spirits of a highly competetive domestic fixture and the annual Cornish Caravan Chaos.

Once again it was Jeremy Moss (707) who adapted to the slippery conditions better than most. Moss took the first heat by the length of a straight, and following two restarts in the Final, he held on to his lead from the front to win in style. In the other heat it was only a broken throttle cable that stopped Moss from the win, and this allowed Kane Moore (832) to take the flag. Paul Rice (990) was the other yellow graded winner in heat three. The Grand National served up the best action of the day as Neil Hooper (676) clawed through the lower grades only for the yellow flags to come out, first for Justin Fisher (315) and then when Moss hit an inner field marker tyre. Hooper charged to the front with three laps remaining to win from Eddie Darby (877) and Moore.

James Southall (221) had probably his best meeting in Cornwall for some time as he took the Heat and Grand National, and also managed a third in the final behind Andy Thomas (27) and winner Luke Thomas (916). Southall benefitted from his blue grade as the charging stars in the reds had their own personal battle for places, none more so than Andy Thomas and Barry Trickey (37) who had a very close competitve Grand National.

Antony Mortley (22) had a meeting to remember as he won heat three before winning the final following the yellow flags, being quickest in the remaining two lap dash to the chequered.  In heat one Donna Cotterell (717) was the early leader but all the time Ben Hale (991) was coming through from the back of the grid and it was Hale who took the first heat.  Heat two was won by Sean Gillett (415). One Allcomers race was held, and when early leader Steve Hunt (282) dropped some water (351) Darrin Burley spun on the slippery track, rolled, and ended up perched on the fence. Following the restart, 282 held on to win from his son Danny Hunt (382)

Caravan Chaos

Eleven caravans started the annual Cornish Caravan Chaos and thus carnage and destruction ensued once again. (860) Dan Perryman was the first to lose his caravan after only one lap, and when (131) Stephen Cock lost his "Cockerill" on the pit bend a pile up was inevitable. (210) Mike Johns managed to find a way through, closely followed by Alistair Buchan (194). Johns decided to then join in the fun by launching himself up and on to 860's trailer and this was to be his downfall, letting 194 through to win.
