United Downs Raceway - Sunday 5th September 2010

Truly miserable weather in west Cornwall put the dampener on proceedings for this month's race meeting at the United Downs Raceway, although 835 Matt Westaway was not complaining.  The F2 racer, in his debut season, scored his first ever feature final victory.

Just 22 F2s were available for their penultimate appearance in Cornwall this season, and drivers were faced with tricky conditions all day.  In heat one, 189 Paul Butcher looked set for victory, but conked out just over a lap from home, which presented 306 Neil Truran with the win.  In heat two, 954 Jamie Beere drove superbly to head home several who had pursued him for much of the race.  The third heat was won by 835 Matt Westaway, who was some distance clear at the chequered.  It was a similar story in the final, as Westaway built up an unassailable lead.  Butcher and 254 Richard Beere completed the top three, having enjoyed a fine battle between themselves.  The GN saw the chequered flag fall on Butcher, but he was docked for a jumped start, and thus 116 Ashley Rundle inherited the win.  Westaway and Richard Beere were grade award winners, as was 785 Liam Deeble.

Stock Rods

There was a first ever Stock Rod race win for 184 Lawrence Tye.  The white grade driver had held out until late on in the opening race, but could not withstand the challenge from star man 642 Simon Jones.  Tye, though, was not to be caught in the final, and he won from Jones and 54 John Tait.  There were countless incidents in the Grand National, which was ultimately won by 40 Rick Cornell, although second place for Jones booked him a front row start for the Grand National Championship on 7 November.

Bangers

Slightly lower numbers from the Bangers did not detract from the action.  999 Jon Glover enjoyed his finest hour, when he swept to a heat and final double, to earn himself an instant promotion to the star grade.  Fellow white top, 320 Dan Abbott, was the day's other heat winner in the Bangers, and 526 Dan Morefield took the consolation.  Points Champion 991 Ben Hale made it through to second in the final, and 60 Andy Bulled completed the top three.  Hale went on to claim his first win of the season in the Allcomers event.
