On This Day - 22nd July

On this day in 1990, Autospeed finally entered the realm of big time Saloon Stock Cars, by staging the British Championship at Newton Abbot.  Top star names from across England and Scotland converged on The Racecourse, to produce a thunderous display of action, which included the incredible incident when 30 Steve Mayes leapt skyward after climbing over the rolling 98 John Harding.  The British title went to 302 Deane Wood, on his track debut, and he received the trophy from outgoing Champion Geoff Morris, who was denied the chance to defend after suffering an arm injury in the weeks leading up to the event.
