On This Day - 22nd June

On this day in 2019, 190 Steve Bailey regained the National Bangers Championship of the World title at Smeatharpe.  Having suffered from poor weather in recent times, and to answer the pleas from drivers to move it to a summer’s evening, the event was staged in June for the first time.  The entry of cars for the race was to include a wide range of cars, including 917 Andrew Tew in a Scorpio Limo and vintage Triumphs for 120 Mark Ashley and 891 Darren Wade.  Indeed, Mark led the race until the midway point before Steve spun him aside.  Steve then saw off a spirited challenge from track debutant 208 PJ Collins, to secure his third victory in the event.
