On This Day - 24th July

On this day in 1994, the World Championship for Saloon Stock Cars was contested at Newton Abbot.  This was to be the one and only occasion the race for the gold roof was staged at The Racecourse.  The outcome of the race was denied in a dramatic twist late on.  After a rollover for 98 Mark Mills, the race was stopped.  At the time, 900 Mark Gray was the leader, from 490 Ian Jarman.  When the race resumed, 114 Nick Courtier removed Ian, leaving Mark clear at the front with just a handful of laps remaining.  However, Ian took revenge by removing Mark with a highly controversial move, and that left 68 Harry Burgoyne to inherit the lead and win the World title for the first time.
