United Downs Raceway - Sunday 4th May 2008

A ferocious display by the Saloon Stock Cars illuminated their English Championship fixture at the United Downs Raceway, St Day, and in a race of great excitement and drama, 186 Todd Jones withstood a last bend attack from defending Champion 511 Craig Barnett to capture the cross of St George.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
The monthly outing at St Day for the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars saw 29 drivers in action, and a magnificent display by 812 Scott Williams netted him a final win that was his first ever at St Day, and his first since a recent promotion to the star grade.  Williams drove superbly to take the AMPS Electrical Services sponsored final, withstanding a last bend challenge from 667 Tim Farrell.
877 Eddie Darby notched his first ever F2 race win, and 315 Justin Fisher followed up a victory in the consolation with a top three finish in the final.

Saloon Stock Cars
A fine showing of 28 drivers headed west for the English Championship.
Racing to a two from three format, there were heat wins for 490 Ian Jarman, 176 Murray Jones and 720 Shane Brown.
A coin toss was needed to determine who would earn pole, and that went in favour of Jones, who had Brown for company on the front row.
The action that followed was little short of stupendous as drivers battled tigerishly for the English title.
Jones and Brown swapped the lead repeatedly, until Jones sent Brown spiralling up the pits bend fence in a most spectacular incident.
With Jones delayed, 499 David Aldous took the lead, but he was overhauled by 186 Todd Jones.  Into the closing stages, defending Champion 511 Craig Barnett closed on Todd Jones, and seemed perfectly placed to challenge and retain the title.  Barnett left it until the final bend, but his shove on Jones was a little under strength.  Jones held on, and as the two raced side by side for the line, it was Jones who got there first by the most slender of margins.
Thus, Todd Jones became English Champion, just thirteen months after making his debut in the Saloon Stock Car formula.  The race had been truly outstanding, and most befitting of an event of such importance.

Reliant Robins
The first ever St Day outing by the three-wheelers, saw nine Plastic Pigs make it on to the track.  87 Barry Richards won all three races, but local drivers 141 Toby Tiddy and 142 James Herman, who were each making their Robin Reliant debut, both declared the day to be the funniest they had ever had at racing.
