Sunday 6th April 2008

United Downs Raceway - Sunday 6th April 2008
Despite what seems to be a never-ending winter, conditions at the United Downs Raceway, St Day were mostly dry, despite the odd flurry of sleet, hail and rain.

A typically robust showing by Track Champion 667 Tim Farrell, earned him the feature final win at the season's second F2 fixture in Cornwall.  Farrell benefitted from a succession of race suspensions, to forge his way into contention, and when each opportunity presented itself to him, he took the chance with both hands.  Farrell was instrumental in the demise of fellow star 393 Chris Cuming and 127 Matt Stoneman, and when he subsequently overhauled 497 Piers Cockerill, it sent Farrell into the lead.  Good fortune followed for Farrell, as 677 Chris Roots challenged for the lead, but only glanced off the rear of Farrell's car, and was delayed.
Further disappointment followed for Roots, for having crossed the line second, he subsequently failed the post-race axle offset check, and had to be excluded from the result.
The opening heat saw young 126 Jamie Avery win for the very first time, whilst both 707 Jeremy Moss and 832 Kane Moore each notched their first victories of the new season, in heat two and the consolation respectively.
On his first visit to St Day since 2006, 642 Dave Luscombe took the end of day Grand National race, to underline his strong liking for the west Cornwall circuit.

Bangers (under 1800cc)
Although there were a number of incomplete teams, the annual under 1800cc Team Championship for the Bangers produced a wealth of lively action.  First blood went to Posh Wash West, as they set a strong foundation for themselves in heat one, by ensuring all four of their team finished, with 190 Steve Bailey the race winner.
Bailey and 66 Dave Spooner had each raced the night before at Mildenhall in Suffolk, and had made the incredible journey back to be at St Day.  Spooner could not get his car to run in the first heat, but was ready for heat two, and he inspired his team, Renegades A, to a fine result which got them back in the hunt for the title.  479 Jamie Jenkin took the win, as all four of Renegades A went the distance.
The star of heat three was 55 James Ogborn of the Fast Food team.  Under intense pressure as the last of his team, he drove superbly to eliminate some other drivers, yet still finish the race himself.  The first four places were filled by two drivers from Posh Wash West, and two from Renegades A, and thus Posh Wash West maintained their lead to run out overall winners of the competition.
Once the three races of the Team Championship had been concluded, the day's events for the Bangers finished with a Destruction Derby contest, in which 452 Anthony Sleeman outlasted the rest, to take the victory.

Ministox
Honours were well shared amongt the youngsters in the Ministox, as 925 Jordan Pattison and 991 Ryan Hoskin each won a heat.  971 Jason Cox was first over the line in the final, but was disqualified at post-race scrutineering after his car failed the height test, and that promoted 923 Lee Porter into first place.
