Monday 28th May 2007

Smeatharpe Stadium, Taunton - 28th May 2007

The ninth annual Crasharama at Smeatharpe, saw vastly improved weather conditions from the previous day. Despite a small sprinkling of no-shows on the original entry list, a significant number of extras and late additions boosted ranks, and almost 70 cars assembled in the pit area. As is always the case, the big cars produced big action, with lots of crashes - notably in the Allcomers race, which had a long jacking train at the end of the back straight. Victory in the main event went to 536 Annette Nicholls, for the second year in a row, but unfortunately the race had to be halted prematurely due to some unsavoury incidents at the pit gate.

Bangers (unlimited cc)
Heat wins in the qualifying phase for Crasharama, went the way of 66 Dave Spooner, 46 Keith Painter and 190 Steve Bailey, with a win in the consolation for 45 Anthony Croshaw putting the seal on 23 entrants for the big money final. The first attempt to run the race had to be halted, when 555 Ben Williams needed assistance after being run in sensationally in the west bend by 551 Simon Whant. For the re-run, defending Champion Annette Nicholls took up the running early on, but as the race progressed, World Champion Maverick gradually reduced her advantage. He was certainly closing on her as the race entered the closing stages, but an altercation at the pits gate, between 521 Ash Riley, and Croshaw, who was still in his car, forced the race to be stopped, and the result called. Hence, the first Lady of Banger racing retained the title - the first driver to do so in the history of Crasharama. Thirteen cars limped on to the track for the King of Crash/DD, and after a prolonged head-to-head battle, 428 Grumpy saw off 239 Nemesis to take the victory.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
Another good showing of 34 cars (plus two more who failed to get through practice), produced some typically lively Stock Car action. There were heat wins for 628 Chris Stephens and 886 Chris Bradbury, before 667 Tim Farrell took his stunning new car to the chequered flag in the consolation. Light rain preceeded the Ermington MOT Centre final, and made for difficult conditions, especially in the early phase of the race. 990 Paul Rice led initially, until 613 Ian Serpell closed on him. Even when Serpell went by, however, Rice kept him in his sights. Farrell made good progress late on, but it was Serpell who held on for a fine win. Rice got his reward with a win in the Grand National..
