Sunday 17th August 2008 (Smeatharpe Stadium)

Smeatharpe Stadium - Sunday 17th August 2008

The Championship day of Speedweekend featured some terrific race action from the three classes on duty, amidst which 393 Chris Cuming lifted the F2 Nationals trophy for his first title success, and 402 Shaun Webster recaptured the National Championship for Saloon Stock Cars after having first won it in 2001.

National Points Champion 402 Shaun Webster added the gold stripe of National Champion to the roof of his car, when he led for almost the whole of the title race.  A late charge by 720 Shane Brown saw him claim the runner-up place, with 401 Steve Webster third and 219 Luke Grief fourth.  All four drivers received magnificent prizes from event sponsors PJ Kingwell & Sons Ltd.

The feature event of the afternoon for F2s saw 393 Chris Cuming capture his first major title, as he lifted the splendid F2 Nationals trophy.  Cuming drew grid 12, and made an excellent start, before building a commanding lead.  Both 401 Barry Goldin and defending Champion 886 Chris Bradbury gave chase, but could not reel in the delighted Cornish star.
An explosive Teen Sensations race saw numerous lead changes, and a last bend finish that had the result in doubt all the way to the chequered flag.  When the flag did fall, it was on 186 George Turiccki, by the most slender of margins from 935 Nathan Maidment and 823 Sam Wagner.
In the meeting final, Barry Goldin won the Steve Rich Memorial Trophy, with a display that had all the hallmarks of the former World and British Champion at his best.  Goldin was sensational as he cut a swathe through the pack to score a very convincing victory.

Micro Bangers
A healthy entry of just under 30 Micro Bangers contested this year's fourth and final World Championship qualifying round.  The entry included matching Austin A40 Somersets for 46 Cliff Friend, 55 James Ogborn and 775 Dave High, who was on his first appearance of the season.
The biggest success of the day was 239 Steve Carter, who scored well all afternoon, to rise to third place on the World points chart.
A fine return after more than twelve months off, saw 989 Dean Arm back in the thick of things, and he won a heat as well as the end of meeting DD event.
