A huge crowd descended on the United Downs Raceway, for this year's Blockbusta, which attracted over 70 big unlimited cc cars, and the heavily populated starting grids led to lots of action, as the Bangers well and truly turned up the wick.
Bangers (unlimited cc)A stunning array of cars assembled for this year's Blockbusta. Amongst them, there were four Rolls Royces, a Daimler DS420 Hearse, some meaty Yank Tanks, and two irresistible cars from the Dutch drivers - 13 Pieter Leistra's Chevy Bel Air Hearse, and the 1961 Plymouth Coranado Limo of 640 Henk de Jager.Just three cars out of around about 30 finished the first heat, with 67 Ricky Beasley taking the victory. The race also included a rollover for 557 Crazy John.In heat two, the 6-door Mk3 Granada Limo was sent hurtling up the pits bend fence. Much more of a race followed, and all twelve finishers, led home by 262 Buddy James, earned a place in the Blockbusta final. The consolation was a manic event, with all manner of action in the turnstile bend parking lot. Cars crashed into the heap, then barged and forced their way through. 207 Compo was awarded the win, as the driver to have done most laps before the red flags were called.26 of the 29 qualifiers gridded for the Blockbusta final. Beasley was well clear early on, but swerved to avoid a car, and popped a driveshaft. With Beasley gone, 202 Mike Kilford took up the running, and he looked on course for the title. However, when 47 Marcus A'Lee got clobbered in the door amidst a gaggle of cars on the back straight, the race was red flagged. A'Lee was eventually cut free from his car, and after a trip to hospital, he was allowed home with suspected fractured ribs. The restart saw 133 Werzal edge past Kilf, who was then spun by Buddy James, and James went one step further by overhauling Werzal with a lap and a half to go. James then held on and was just out of Werzal's range on the final bend. Hence, Buddy James took the Blockbusta title, from Werzal, Kilf and 384 Goldie.Werzal's great day continued when he took the Allcomers race, in which Goldie stood Buddy James on his nose in the pits bend.Just shy of 20 cars appeared for the DD, in which 199 Bona obliterated the Granada Limo of 55 Oggy. The DD concluded with a big head-on involving 28 Capgun and 88 Woody, which left 80 Nutspeed valiantly trying to eek his way off the infield. A dead heat between Capgun and Woody would have been an acceptable outcome, but Nutspeed was genuinely the last car running.Stock RodsThe non-contact Stock Rods turned out in good numbers, with 17 cars on the grid - the best at St Day so far this season. On his track debut, teenager 288 Harry Palmer swept to a heat and final double, with 578 Rick Lee as his runner-up each time.Points Champion 125 Mike Hibberd bounced back from a heavy crash in the first heat, to win the Grand National.MinistoxThe qualifying heats for the Cornish Championship brought a pair of white grade winners. The first heat was won by 995 Ben Goddard, and then 981 Vicky Butcher took heat two for her first ever race win.The title race began as a three-way contest involving 923 Lee Porter, 991 Ryan Hoskin and 370 Kyle Overy, and it was Overy who edged clear of the south west pair. Hoskin continued to chase, but Overy was not to be denied the top prize of the day for the youngsters. Results - see also
