The 26th annual Bangers Championship of the World saw a virtuoso performance from defending Champion, 617 Jack Overy, who was in majestic form as he swept to the title.
Bangers (unlimited cc)Just shy of 50 Bangers contested this year's Championship of the World, which was totally dominated by 617 Jack Overy, who won his second successive title, with his third victory in five years at Smeatharpe.Following up his One Sunny Day success, 710 Ben Wilkins took the Last Chance qualifier, to continue a good run of success at Smeatharpe. The random draw for the World Final pitted 384 John Golden and 311 Gary Lown on the front row. Defending Champion Jack Overy drew 7 from the 31 starters, and he took barely a lap before hitting the front. All around him, there were countless incidents and big crashes, not least from 239 Steve Carter, whose Mercury Grand Marquis dished out hit after hit. Many times Overy looked about to be delayed, or caught up, but he brilliantly saw his way through the chaos to clinch the win, with 528 Alan Hunt his runner-up, Sam Wyatt Showman in third and 341 Andrew Jones in fourth.Overy proceeded to win both the Allcomers races, easing to victory on both occasions. The DD had to be stopped for an unfortunate incident when 714 Paul Smaldon shoved 248 John Sparks into a recovery tractor. The restart saw Wilkins pummel 341 Andrew Jones and 269 Dean French seemingly to a halt, but as French sought to get going, Wilkins took up the invite from Jones to blast him again. That ended the hopes of Wilkins, just as French found some forward momentum, and it was French who duly took the victory.BriSCA F2 Stock CarsYoung gun 990 Paul Rice enjoyed his finest hour yet, by sweeping impressively to a consolation and final double. In the opening heat, there was a Cornish white grade one-two, as 737 Neil Lampshire led home 116 Ashley Rundle. Heat two went the way of 497 Piers Cockerill, after a long spell in the lead for 992 Ian Jefferies. After winning the consolation, Rice had to grid at the rear of the yellow grade for the final, but he made a good start to move swiftly into contention, with Jefferies, Rundle and 830 Andrew Bennett as the early pacesetters. The star grade found the going tough, as they were repeatedly hindered, and that greatly aided Rice, as he charged his way to the front. Rice completed the closing stages for what was ultimately a comfortable win, with Bennett the runner-up, and 393 Chris Cuming the first star grader home in third.A thrilling Grand National saw countless lead changes and battles high up the order 167 Bill Batten emerged victorious.Saloon Stock CarsAfter the exertions of their World Championship last weekend, numbers dipped in the Saloon Stock Cars, although racegoers were able to welcome new gold top 720 Shane Brown back to his home circuit.328 Ian Govier scored a last bend win in the opening heat, as he sent long time leader 834 Dan Climo into a spin.In heat two, Climo secured his first victory for some time, whilst 666 Stan Petty was hugely entertaining in his efforts to disrupt all other drivers. The final had an explosive conclusion. Climo led, until Brown caught and passed him. However, Climo fought back, and as he and Brown played cat and mouse, English Champion 186 Todd Jones pounced. Into the last bend, Brown led Jones then Climo. The bumpers went in, Brown went wide, so did Jones, but Climo could just not get to the line before them both. Hence, Brown held on, and Climo beat Jones by the most slender of margins for second. Results - see also
