There was a feast of race action at the United Downs Raceway, with good numbers in all formulas. 550 Andy Sobey wrote his own chapter into the history books by winning a BriSCA F2 Stock Car final for the first time, and the meeting ended in spectacular style, with the annual Cornish Caravan Chaos race which turned into the traditional orgy of wanton destruction.
BriSCA F2 Stock CarsThere was a fairy tale result in the F2 final for 550 Andy Sobey, who enjoyed his finest hour, by securing a career first feature final win. At the drop of the green flag, Sobey charged clear, and whilst the massed ranks of drivers behind him fought for position over the next 20 laps, Sobey simply kept his head and produced his best ever display.Sobey built up a huge lead, and was still comfortably clear as the race moved into its last quarter. Former four times World Champion 167 Bill Batten moved into second place, but he was then disqualified when his wheel guard became detached. Even so, Batten was still some distance behind Sobey, and it would have taken a tremendous effort to reel him in in those closing stages. As it was, Sobey cruised to the chequered flag, and afforded himself a punch of the air as he crossed the line, to win from 393 Chris Cuming and 877 Eddie Darby. Sobey also became the sixth different final winner in as many meetings at St Day this season.Earlier on in the race, there was a huge crash on the home straight, as 830 Andrew Bennett, 14 Mike Priddle, 891 Darren Wade and 95 Roger Willcock careered into one another and slid up the safety fence.Batten bounced back from his disappointment in the final, to win the Grand National, in which 105 Ross Rowe chased him home for his own best result for some time. The opening heat went to Cuming, and there was a double disqualification at the end of heat two. 667 Tim Farrell failed the track width test, and runner-up 95 Roger Willcock failed the offset axle test, which left third over the line 315 Justin Fisher as the winner by default.Farrell overcame the disappointment to win the consolation.BangerstoxYet again, the Bangerstox turned out in good numbers, with 46 drivers in the meeting proper, and a further two drivers who saved their cars for the end of meeting Caravan Chaos race.Heat one went to 804 Treve Wills, whilst 414 Ed Lewis enjoyed a dream debut by winning his first ever race in heat two.Thereafter, the day belonged to 118 Ian Harris. He won the consolation race to qualify for the final, and he then won that race too, to earn a promotion to the star grade.Harris then completed a hat-trick of victories, when he got the better of Lewis in a thrilling race-long battle in the Allcomers event, with star graded 677 Glenn Nash chasing them home in third place.MinistoxHonours were evently shared amongst the youngsters in the Ministox. Each of the three races for the juniors yielded a different race winner.926 Matt Bright scored a narrow last lap victory in heat one, and in heat two, there was an even more dramatic finish. 991 Ryan Hoskin pounced superbly, as 923 Lee Porter and East Anglian star visitor 170 Kyle Overy played a game of cat and mouse on the last lap.Overy was not to be denied a victory, however, and he stormed to the chequered flag in the Ministox final.Caravan ChaosA magnificent showing of ten drivers contested the annual Cornish Caravan Chaos race which left a scene of complete devastation. The race included an amazing incident, when 154 Barry Pike leapt the caravan chassis of 153 Rachel Tavender. Pike's car momenarily landed on the RAT's roof, before rolling off and on to its side. A smiling Pike exited the car to great cheers from the crowd, and when the race resumed Tavender looked on course to win, but got snagged on some abandoned caravans. That left the door open for 60 Andrew Bulled to take the victory, as just three drivers went the distance. Results - see also
