Sunday 15th July 2007

Smeatharpe Stadium, Taunton - 15th July 2007

Many local folk were present at Smeatharpe for the Ringo Starr Memorial event for Bangers, which also saw the return of the Hot Rods, the West of England for the Stock Rods, and an improved showing of Ministox.

Hot Rods
A dozen Hot Rods made their first appearance at Smeatharpe since 2005, and despite the very difficult track conditions, feedback from drivers was very positive, for the revised layout. Heat wins went to 282 Steve Hunt and 117 Dave Tossell, and there was also a good display of front-running by 181 Lindsay Jones. The final looked to be developing into a head to head battle between 54 Mark Sear and 734 Ralph Sanders, but Sanders partially spun, and Sear was able to break clear in his pursuit of Jones. Sear duly won at a canter, with Tossell and 205 Mike Norton completing the top three.

Bangers (under 1800cc)
Five drivers featured in Farm Boyz colours, to celebrate the late Ian 'Ringo' Starr, whilst the 115 Tom White car was truly exquisite, with a painting of Ian his son Harry, on the bonnet of his car. The full entry was just under 30 cars, and some of the action was particularly brutal. 239 Steve Carter, released from his suspension for one day on compassionate grounds, took the first heat, and 556 Pete Hollis won heat two from 708 Julian Hellier as the Farm Boyz contingent enjoyed some success. The final went to 988 Billy Dennison, as he just kept clear of the chasing 117 Ollie Starr, and it was Ringo's brother Ollie who took a splendid win in the DD, after finishing off 199 Phil Powell.

Stock Rods
125 Mike Hibberd won the West of England Championship for Stock Rods, but he was involved in a clash with race leader 306 Neil Truran that saw Truran spin into the home straight marker tyres. Hibberd then had to overhaul 642 Simon Jones, who had earned pole for the title race, after two runner-up finishes in his heats. Hibberd got ahead of Jones, then took the chequered, to win from Jones and 354 Mark Sear who drove very well to secure third.

Ministox
Newcomer 991 Ryan Hoskin made a fine start to his Ministox career, by winning his first race. 930 Jordan Lobb was a clear winner of heat two, but as a race winner, he failed to grid at the back of his grade for the final, and was duly docked in the result, despite crossing the line first. That elevated Hoskin, for his second success, and 926 Matt Bright and 244 James Rogers filled the other top three places.
