Sunday 2nd March 2008

Smeatharpe Stadium, Taunton - Sunday 2nd March 2008
Four formulas combined for the Grand Opening meeting of the new national season for Stock Car racing in the westcountry.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
National Points Champion 7 Gordon Moodie made something of a surprise trip to the south west, by contesting the opening meeting of the new season at Smeatharpe, but his journey was a worthwhile one, as he swept to top honours in the feature final. Teenager 127 Matt Stoneman disputed the lead with 497 Piers Cockerill, but the duel served only to hinder their progress, and as Moodie advanced up the running order, he was able to pounce in the last quarter of the race. "Folk are so friendly when I come to the westcountry, so that is why we have chosen to be here today," revealed Moodie, when quizzed over his decision to forsake an appearance much closer to home at Skegness.

Saloon Stock Cars
A decent showing of 16 Saloon Stock Cars contested their first south west meeting of the year.
National Points Champion 402 Shaun Webster headed home 102 James Horwell in the opening heat, and 305 Nigel Parker took a first Smeatharpe win in heat two, ahead of 711 Michael Mallett, who was also showing some good form.  East Anglian Parker won again in the final, leading home Webster and 30 Barry Hollett.

Bangers (under 1800cc)
A day of lively action from the Bangers included plenty of big crashes, with 718 Adie Brown, 362 Johnny James and 341 Andrew Jones each heavily involved.  Brown, 190 Steve Bailey, 530 Alvin Jones and 46 Cliff Friend each scooped Best Presented awards, although Friend's car was looking decidedly second-hand after a big follow-in from 265 Stu Foster in the final.  James and 239 Steve Carter took the honours in the heats, but it was 988 Billy Dennison who won the final.

Ministox
There was a double success for 944 Ollie Wakefield, but visiting star 370 Kyle Overy took the final for the youngsters.
