Sunday 8th June 2008

Smeatharpe Stadium - Sunday 8th June 2008
In blistering summer sunshine, the first of two meetings at Smeatharpe in June, saw the Saloon Stock Cars grab the headlines with a rough, tough display on the occasion of their Devon Championship.

328 Ian Govier unveiled his brand new car, and promptly secured the Devon Championship.  Govier romped to victory in the title race, to win by a convincing margin from European Champion 720 Shane Brown and British Champion 219 Luke Grief.
In the next race, 176 Murray Jones perfected a last bend challenge on long time leader 11 Richard Paris, to just steal the win on the line.
The concluding race for the Saloon Stock Cars again saw Paris in the lead, but a late charge by Brown brought him a first win of the afternoon.

A good showing of 34 cars included the return of 167 Bill Batten for his first appearance of the season, and he duly won his first race, by taking the second heat, after 667 Tim Farrell had won the opener.
76 Chris Rowe made a late charge to secure the consolation, setting up an exciting final for the Dave Wilson Memorial Trophy.
990 Paul Rice led the final for much of the way, but a loose plug lead as the race entered the final quarter, proved his undoing, and 676 Neil Hooper took up the running, to secure his first feature race win of the season.  642 Dave Luscombe finished as the runner-up and 189 Paul Butcher was third.
After a brace of second places, Luscombe finally got his hands on the chequered flag when he won the GN, after some front running by 127 Matt Stoneman.

Although a fraction down on previous meetings at Smeatharpe this season, there were still 67 drivers in attendance.
Heat wins went to 677 Glenn Nash, 550 Garry Bowers and 991 Ben Hale.  In the consolation, 619 Ross Thomas bounced back from a failure to finish his heat by winning a frantic race, and Thomas then took the feature final, leading home Hale and Nash.
475 Ben Sealy completed the race wins, when he emerged victorious from the Allcomers event to conclude another hectic day for the Bangerstox.
