Saturday 29th December 2007

United Downs Raceway, St Day - Saturday 29th December 2007

A blustery and showery day greeted St Day for its festive fixture, but despite the difficult track conditions that were faced by the drivers there was some good and close racing from all four formulae on duty.

The Saloon Stock Cars had their third outing of the season in Cornwall and their first out of season date in the south west since January 2005.  Whilst it was disappointing that there were no drivers present graded above yellow, those that were present provided competitive racing.  489 Darren Jarvis won the first heat and then enjoyed a battle with 240 Tony Gould in the second heat and Final, which the latter got the better of to ensure that he has won five of the past six races at St Day.  900 Daniel Harris came through for third and also picked up a trophy for the day's best white graded driver.

The Bangers rounded out the programme with an above average entry of cars, and despite many of the drivers racing in two meetings in as many days there wasn't much letting go in terms of on track action.  479 Jamie Jenkin, who also had a good meeting in the corresponding date last year, won the first heat before 341 Andrew Jones took the second heat.  Having had a third and second place 406 Chris Bridger won the Final ahead of 383 Andre McLellan and 190 Steve Bailey.

A good entry of Stock Rods saw a welcome return to racing for 221 James Southall who made sure of it in the best way possible by scoring a heat and Final double of victories.  500 Kim Carter once again made his long trip worthwhile by making second and 37 Barry Trickey was third whilst 40 Rick Cornell came through to win the Grand National.

A visiting quartet of drivers in the Ministox took the lions share of the places, with 161 Billy Smith, son of former Saloon Stock Car driver Diggy, taking both the heats but he couldn't catch 191 Jimmy Galloway in the Final who took the victory with Smith making second and 190 Mickey Galloway making third.
