The annual Christmas festive period produced some lively race action at Smeatharpe from the three classes that were on duty. Saloon Stock Cars Four extra drivers to the previous day helped to boost the Saloon Stock Car numbers, and the racing was far more exciting as a result. 186 Todd Jones took the opening heat, and was leading heat two until his engine expired, and that opened the door for 720 Shane Brown to sweep past for victory. The final was led by 316 Craig Driscoll, until 98 Mark Mills and Brown contested first place. For a moment, the two of them appeared to have hindered one another's hopes, but as they bounced out of the fence at the start of the back straight, Brown just kept ahead of the chasing 489 Darren Jarvis. Mills blew his engine in the late stages, leaving Jarvis and 240 Tony Gould to follow home race winner Brown. Bangers (under 1800cc) Several fresh cars featured amongst the entry of Bangers, including those of Best Presented winners, 190 Steve Bailey, 741 Alex Waterman and 220 Martin Lawrence. Bailey won the opening heat, yet even found time to dispatch 262 Buddy James to the pits bend fence, but in heat two, 555 Ben Williams held up Bailey at the start, although several failed to take the opportunity to blast the static Bailey. Victory went to 239 Steve Carter. In the final, Carter dumped 66 Dave Spooner into the pits bend wall, as 341 Andrew Jones forged into the lead. However, after burying 988 Billy Dennison, Bailey set off on a late charge and overhauled Jones to net himself the victory, and with it the Smeatharpe Track Championship. Despite a less than successful day, Spooner held on to his lead in the Points Championship, and earned himself the right to a silver roof for 2008. Bangerstox For the fourth meeting in a row at Smeatharpe, the Bangerstox exceeded the 60-car mark, and the standard of presentation by some drivers was very high indeed. Of the very good efforts on show, it was 145 Andrew Morgan, 250 Peter Shipton and 719 Wayne Hill who earned Best Presented awards. Heat wins went to 117 Ollie Starr, 675 Martin Nash and 808 Mark Curtis, before 304 Chris Saintey took the consolation on the occasion of his debut outing. The final was stopped early on when 941 Hannah Creed needed attention after injuring her thumb in a pits bend crash. Once underway again, 916 Luke Thomas made it into the lead, after 351 Darrin Burley had been the early front runner. The race was stopped prematurely, when 648 Becky Fitton also required attention at the end of the home straight. Hence, Thomas took the win, from Burley and 787 Dave Cottrell. The meeting concluded with a win in the Allcomers for 369 Gary Holmes.
