As is customary, it is the Winter Open Championship for 2 Litre National Bangers which headlines the first fixture of the new year.  The non-contact Stock Rods, and the 11-16 year olds in the Ministox will also feature, as they each begin their 2018 Points Championships.

961 Brad Deeprose was the winner of the 2017 Winter Open.  He plans another return visit to the westcountry, to defend the title.

Former Winter Open Champion 162 Brett Ellacott topped the Autospeed Points chart in 2017, and will thus return to wearing a silver roof this season.  Ellacott will be presented with his award as the winner of the Points Championship.
The entry will also include two of the sport's current World Champions - 74 Adam Hitchock, and 190 Steve Bailey, who has won the Winter Open title more than any other driver.
Perennial Autospeed regular 45 Anthony Croshaw will also be on the grid, as he hunts one of the titles that has so far eluded him.
Former Autospeed Points Champion 133 Terry Hill is another highly fancied contender who has yet to include the Winter Open Championship amongst his list of honours.
Brothers 297 Chris Hommell and 397 Ben Hommell are each set to feature, with further north Devon interest expected from 42 Dan Relins.
The Roughnecks from south Wales will feature, and are set to include 917 Andrew Tew, 930 Chris Churcher and 921 Kairan Wilson.
There is strong representation expected from the south coast, led by 251 Scott Baker, whilst 20 Jack Dow and 172 Guy Anning are each due to race at Smeatharpe for the first time.
Cornish interest will be led by 776 Terry Senford, 861 Jean-Marc Penaluna, 196 Phil Chapman and 633 Nathan Ferrett.
There is also a quartet of drivers from south east Cornwall, led by 531 David Hosking, and featuring 315 Dave Wilson, 479 Graeme Triggs and 979 Mark Room.
658 Adam Dorse and 174 Ben Sid Taylor are each aiming to make their Winter Open debuts.

Stock Rods

The non-contact Stock Rods will make their first appearance of the year.
As Autospeed will be staging the World Championship for Stock Rods, at Cowdenbeath on 1 & 2 September, each race meeting for them will carry added significance, with drivers looking to earn seeded entries on to the grid.

151 Simon Vincent clinched the Autospeed Points Championship in 2017.  He will thus make his first appearance under the silver roof.

The youngsters will make their first westcountry appearance of the year.
Ahead of racing, Points Champions, 980 Charlie Lobb will be presented with his awards.
917 Gemma Robbins was the winner of the BB Van Hire Trophy, when it was first raced for at the start of the 2016 season, and she will be keen to regain the trophy from last year's winner, Charlie Lobb.
Recent newcomer to the Ministox, 900 Lily Tomkins, is aiming to make here debut appearance in the Ministox.
A Ministox debut is also planned by 998 Taylor Sealy.
Having made his debut in the Ministox at St Day last October, 982 Cameron Holmes will race at Smeatharpe for the first time.
