Smeatharpe Stadium - Sunday 26th May 2019

Despite the disappointment over the reluctant but unavoidable decision to postpone Crasharama, Srping Bank Holiday Sunday still produced some entertaining action.

After the excesses of the British Championship weekend, it was quite an effort by many drivers to be present for another fixture, but 13 drivers made it on track.  In the first heat, 28 Ian Govier relieved 130 Chris Durrant of the lead in the early stages, but was chased by 800 Scott Greenslade.  Govier's undoing was picking a route through the backmarkers, which saw him slowed, and Greenslade was able to edge past him.  Govier attempted an ambitious last bend lunge, but failed to connect.  In heat two, 902 Junior Buster was sent spinning early on.  Govier fired 470 David Vaughan into 980 Charlie Lobb in the pits bend to reclaim second place, and then overhauled race leader Durrant.  However, 56 George Boult Jnr had made a fine start from the star grade, and he nudged Govier wide by halfway to take the lead, which he duly turned into a win.  The Club 21 Trophy final was the race of the day, as drivers battled for position in the early stages.  Greenslade got into the lead, but was challenged by Junior Buster, who managed to hit the front.  Boult Jnr edged past Greenslade to grab second place, but he could not get on terms with Junior Buster who secured his first final win.

Having successfully defended the ORC Championship the night before, 368 Charlie Santry was amongst an entry which included two visiting Scottish youngsters as well.  914 Callum Faulconbridge made most of the running in heat one, but could not withstand the late charge of 577 Harry Darby who took over the lead and sealed the win.  Faulconbridge got away well again in heat two, with Collins the main chaser.  629 Taylor Borthwick nudged 970 Millie Farrell into Sam Carter, and the latter spun in the west bend.  Santry made good progress up the order, but was unable to reel in Faulconbridge who was a comfortable winner at the flag.  There was another white top winner in the final as Collins took the honours, but ultimately, he only just did so for having built up a huge lead, he endured some wayward laps late on, which saw his advantage whittled away, particularly by Santry, who probably needed one more lap.  However, Collins stayed just ahead, and duly landed the Reg Thomas Shield.

Back 2 Basics Bangers

Despite only being added to the programme with four days notice, the Back 2 Basics Bangers managed to assemble 19 drivers.  After 333 Craig Partridge had led the first heat early on, 331 Duncan Kennard bundled his way past.  Kennard was then joined by his nephew, 455 Shane Kennard, and they duelled for the lead.  As they entered the closing stages, backmarker 17 Tim King joined the battle, which saw them all fall by the wayside and 74 Adam Hitchcock inherited the win.  Shane Kennard made a lightning start to heat two, and led from the off.  He was chased by 27 Luke Betts, and late on Kennard's lead came under threat as he was held up by a clutch of backmarkers.  Betts closed, but was unable to challenge for the lead, and thus Kennard took the victory.  Even though 321 Mark Johns was away and gone in the final, there was still plenty of action further back the order.  King and Betts rounded out the top three.  A fine showing of 13 drivers contested the Destruction Derby, which included 202 Matt Butlin and 246 Ryan Sparks who just sat as targets on the start-finish line.  After much crashing, 34 Lee Jackson and 333 Craig Partridge were the last two circulating.  Jackson buried himself into a pile of cars and Partridge survived an ambush from 205 Charles Pearcey, who had already been eliminated on time.  Thus, Partridge was declared the winner.
