Day two of the June Jamboree was again heavily populated with a massive 30-race programme in the iFactor Fast & Furious event at Smeatharpe. A bright and breezy day weather wise made for a relaxing afternoon on the grass bankings for spectators, who enjoyed a livelier day of action.
Modstox
If the Modstox had been good value on Day One, then they turned up the wick for the second day and produced some first class Stock Car action. Having led many laps the previous evening, it was little surprise to see 455 Ryan Grindey out front in heat one. He still had a huge lead by the hallway stage, and even though a spin for 108 Elliot Worth made for some tricky manoeuvres through turn four late on, Grindey was still clear of 6 Adam Perkins when the flag dropped. In heat two, Grindey swept past 330 Charlotte Dyche to take up the running, and proceeded to lead 37 Fred Tebbenham, with Perkins hunting them down. Perkins did indeed get to the leaders, and he nudged Grindey wide with just over a lap to go, before securing the win. 83 Heidi Clark spun at the start of the final, which had Grindey, Tebbenham at the head of the pack from Charlotte Dyche and 30 Tim Dyche. Tebbenham effected a telling challenge to grab the lead, just before the midway point, by which time Perkins was established as the leading star grader and main threat to those at the front. Disaster struck Tebbenham when his car died on him and he ground to a halt on the home straight with just two laps remaining. The race restarted, and Perkins came under pressure from 192 Max Harding and 47 James Faultless, only for the three of them to bundle into the marker tyres in turn one. 10 Marcus Worth shot past and looked set for victory, only for another bout of yellow flags on account of chaotic scenes on the exit of turn four. Worth led off the one lap dash and just held on to spirited last bend attack from Perkins as the two scrambled to the line in a very close finish. 73 Craig Underhill completed the top three, to put the seal on a fine display from the Modstox.
Ladies Bangers
The westcountry whitewash continued in the Ladies Bangers, starting with a win in the opening heat for 721 Carley Gabriel, who duly became the fourth different lady racer to claim the chequered flag during the weekend. In heat two, Gabriel doubled her success, surviving a last bend challenge from 881 Caitlin Emery to rack up her second win. After graded heats, the final, for The Devonshire Cup, saw the grid formed from a random draw, and that placed 133 Faye Madgwick on pole. Although she led the formative stages of the race, it was Emery who sped past to take up the running. Gabriel chased after Emery but was unable to get on terms. When the flag fell, Emery took the win, Gabriel was second over the line but was subsequently docked two places for persistent corner cutting, and that elevated 232 Samanthan White and 717 Donna Cottrell into second and third respectively.
Old Skool Superstox
Another decent showing from the splendid cars in the Old Skool Superstox class resulted in a trio of different race winners. 177 Merv Smart took the opener, 54 Roland Peploe won heat two and the final ended in a blanket finish with 66 Colin Fuller leading home 546 Matthew Gray and 443 Steve Monk. There may not have been many cars, but for those who enjoy some nostalgia, the three races were still full of memories.
